The U.S. Department of State has placed Kazakhstan in Level 1, the lowest risk category under the U.S. travel advisory system. For countries assigned this level, travelers are advised to exercise normal precautions, which are standard for intl  travel.

The same category includes Australia, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Korea, Poland, Norway, and several dozen other countries, including Kazakhstan’s neighboring countries, Uzbekistan and Mongolia.

How the U.S. State Department’s travel advisory system works

The travel advisory system consists of four levels.

Level 2, shown in yellow, means “Exercise Increased Caution” due to specific risks, such as terrorism or crime. Most popular European destinations, including France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Spain, fall into this category.

Level 3, shown in orange, means “Reconsider Travel” due to serious risks.

Level 4, shown in red, means “Do Not Travel” and represents the highest level of risk to personal safety. Countries in this category include Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, and a number of other states.

What this means in Practice

It is important to note that this is not a universal global safety ranking. Rather, it is a travel advisory issued specifically for U.S. citizens. Nevertheless, the assessment is significant. From the U.S. State Department’s perspective, Kazakhstan has been placed in the same category as countries that have long been regarded as safe, stable, and predictable destinations for international travelers.

Notably, a number of popular European tourist destinations that attract millions of visitors each year are formally assessed by the U.S. State Department as presenting a higher level of risk than Kazakhstan.

From the perspective of the U.S. authorities, Kazakhstan is regarded as a stable and welcoming destination where travelers can visit while exercising the normal precautions recommended for international travel.
