State Counselor Erlan Karin announced that, following the instruction of the Head of State given at the 3rd session of the National Kurultai, work is underway to include the Ustyurt Plateau in the Mangystau region in the UNESCO World Heritage List, El.kz reports.

According to him, from September 17 to 24, an expert mission of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) conducted an inspection of this historical and cultural heritage site. The mission involved representatives of central and local government bodies, as well as Kazakhstani experts in archaeology and restoration.

Following the mission, ICOMOS will prepare an expert conclusion with a technical assessment of the nomination “Underground Mosques of the Mangystau Peninsula” for its further inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The final decision will be made at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee session in July 2026.

He also reported that the UNESCO World Heritage Centre has begun the review process of the first joint nomination project in the CIS — the “Ustyurt Plateau.” Thus, the practical implementation of the presidential initiatives announced at the National Kurultai continues.
