Trump announces increased tariffs on Kazakhstan

U.S. President Donald Trump has sent an official letter to President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. According to the document, starting from August 1, 2025, a 25% tariff will be imposed on a number of Kazakh goods exported to the United States, El.kz reports citing Trump’s post on Truth Social.

This decision is part of a new trade strategy by Washington, which also targets countries such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and others. According to Trump, trade with Kazakhstan and several other nations leads to a deficit that the U.S. intends to reduce.

In the letter, the U.S. leader suggested that Kazakhstan invest in production facilities within the United States in order to maintain access to the American market. He also warned that if Kazakhstan responds with measures (such as increased tariffs), the U.S. will raise tariffs even further.

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Trade emphasized that key export items — oil, uranium, silver, and ferroalloys — are not subject to the new restrictions. According to their data, only about 4.8% of Kazakhstan’s exports will be affected. These include items such as phosphorus, ferrosilicon, gluten, and ammonium nitrate.

Experts believe the overall impact on trade will be minimal, as the U.S. accounts for a relatively small share of Kazakhstan’s total exports. However, in the context of global competition, this development may encourage domestic companies to diversify their markets and seek alternative partners.
