Students at the University of Pisa have set a new world record by designing, constructing, and successfully launching the world’s largest paper airplane, El.kz reports.
The project was carried out by a team of 15 engineering students. The development process involved several months of engineering calculations, computer modelling, and flight testing. The aircraft underwent multiple design refinements before achieving a successful full-scale flight.
During the We Make Future exhibition on 25 June, the paper airplane flew nearly 60 metres in a single launch. This achievement enabled the Italian students to establish a new Guinness World Record, surpassing the previous record set by students of the Technical University of Braunschweig in 2013.
According to members of the project team, the initiative originated from casually folding paper airplanes between classes. The experiment subsequently evolved into a large-scale undertaking that integrated aerodynamic analysis, computer simulations, and practical flight testing.
