Almaty is set to pilot self-driving taxi services to hit the streets by May this year. The project is being implemented as part of the "Smart City Almaty" strategy in collaboration with major ride-hailing aggregators, El.kz reports.

How taxis to be tested

During the initial phase, plans call for deploying up to 50 autonomous vehicles on the streets of Almaty. Testing will not begin in general traffic immediately; vehicles will first be tested at closed proving grounds and then on pre-defined routes.

The first trips will involve a safety driver in the cabin. This corresponds to Level 3 (L3) autonomy, where a human can take control if necessary. In the future, a transition to Level 4 (L4) is planned fully autonomous movement under remote supervision.

In parallel, the city is adapting its infrastructure. Authorities plan to update road markings, install additional signage, and create dedicated zones for passenger pick-up and drop-off. These changes are being integrated as part of the preparations for the large-scale implementation of autonomous transport.

Drones and Aerotaxis: What Else is Being Tested?

The development of unmanned transport in Almaty is not limited to cars. Delivery drones are already operational in the city.

Furthermore, there are ongoing discussions regarding the launch of aerotaxis - electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. It is suggested that such vehicles could transport passengers between Almaty and Alatau in just 10–15 minutes.

VIN Service and Electric Vehicles: What We Know

A new service may appear in Almaty in the spring of 2026. Branded cars have already been spotted in the city, and rumors are circulating online that these are VinFast electric vehicles intended for autonomous taxi services.

There has been no official confirmation of this information yet. It remains unclear whether these vehicles will be used in autonomous projects or if this is a standard delivery of electric cars.

Why the Project Requires Time

According to Meiram Dyusyukov, deputy head of the Almaty digitalization department, the launch of autonomous transport is anchored in the "Smart City" development strategy for 2026–2030.

The goal is to have 50 autonomous vehicles on the lines by May 1, 2026. This project is viewed as part of a broader digital transformation of the city, covering transport, safety, ecology, and other sectors.

Experts emphasize that implementing such solutions requires lengthy preparation. This involves not only technology but also the legal framework, infrastructure, and the adaptation of urban conditions.

What This Means for Residents

The launch of autonomous taxis in Almaty is a test of a new model of urban mobility. In the initial stage, the service will be limited and controlled, but in the long term, it could change the way people commute.

If the project proves successful, residents will gain access to more automated, predictable, and high-tech transportation.
