On October 25, Kazakhstan celebrates Republic Day — a holiday that symbolizes the birth of national sovereignty. This day has become not only a major milestone in the country’s history but also an opportunity for young people to reflect on their role in the present and future of Kazakhstan.El.kz conducted a survey among the youth to learn how the new generation perceives this holiday and what it means to those who were born and raised in an independent country.
For many young people, Republic Day is not just a public holiday or a reason for festive events. It is a chance to remember how Kazakhstan found its voice in 1990, declaring sovereignty, territorial integrity, and a commitment to developing its national culture. Young people emphasized that the history of this day fills them with pride and represents not only a historical event but also a symbol of stability, multicultural unity, and opportunities for growth.
“I’m proud that Kazakhstan was able to become independent and build its own unique identity. For me, Republic Day is about the strength and unity of our country,” IT developer from Astana Bakhytbek says.
A holiday as a platform for self-expression
Social media also plays an important role. Young people use modern platforms to express their social stance — posting stories, reels, and photos with the Kazakh flag or videos of national dances.
The younger generation celebrates Republic Day in their own way — through concerts, flash mobs, exhibitions, and festivals held on October 25, which have become creative spaces for self-expression.
Looking ahead: what kind of Kazakhstan does youth want to see?
For the new generation, Republic Day is not only a time to remember the past but also a moment to talk about the future. Young people actively discuss what kind of Kazakhstan they want to see in 10, 20, or 30 years. Among their top priorities are technological advancement, support for creative industries, and environmental protection.
“I want Kazakhstan to be a country where everyone can bring their ideas to life. Republic Day reminds us that we already have the foundation — independence — and now it’s our task to build the future on it,” Aidar, a journalist from Almaty says.
Many also highlight the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Young people are increasingly learning the Kazakh language, embracing traditions.
“Language and culture are what make us unique. For me, Republic Day is about pride in our roots and the desire to share them with the world,” Yeldana, a young mother from Astana shares.
A Holiday that unites
Despite different interests and viewpoints, Republic Day brings Kazakhstani people together. It’s a day when young people feel part of a greater story and recognize their responsibility for the country’s future. Whether through official parades or informal gatherings, the festive atmosphere fosters a sense of unity.
“When I see people coming together to celebrate Republic Day, I realize that we are one big family. It inspires me to believe in a better future for Kazakhstan,” Kamshat, an interpreter from Astana says.
For Kazakhstan’s youth, Republic Day is not only a historical date but also an occasion for pride, creativity, and dreaming about the future. The new generation sees this holiday as a chance to express their love for the country, reflect on its achievements, and think about how to make Kazakhstan even better.
