President Tokayev on harmful effects of social media

Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev gave an extended interview to Turkistan newspaper.

Kazakh President commented on the role of print media, the importance of reading, and spoke about the impact of regular social media use on the cognitive development, El.kz reports.

According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, traditional print media are currently experiencing a new stage of development.

“Newspapers and magazines experiences a significant "renaissance" because social media cause significant harm to people’s cognitive abilities,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted.

The President also drew attention to the changes in the level of information perception, emphasizing:

“Today we encounter individuals in their 40s with the educational level and mentality of fifteen-year-old teenagers.”

According to Kazakh leader, in modern conditions print media are finding their audience by focusing on analysis and thoughtful interpretation of events.

“In today’s realities, print media are finding their niche, placing emphasis on reviews and analytics, and fulfilling educational functions,” the Head of State noted.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev separately highlighted the role of professional journalism.

“Newspaper materials produced by professional journalists perform an important task in preserving traditional values,” he said.

According to the President, that printed media is still important.

Comparing with popular digital platforms, the Head of State noted that “currently popular TikTok, Instagram, and Telegram channels, let us agree, are far from the fundamental interests of working people.”

President added that it is important for society to strive for deeper and more meaningful consumption of information.

“I would like our society to live not only on news sensations and short videos, but to value meaningful information,” the President said.

The President also noted that “countries with a high culture of reading will remain at the forefront of global progress”.
