Number of electric cars in Kazakhstan increased by more than 9 times
In Kazakhstan, there is a significant increase in interest in passenger electric vehicles. Over the past year, the number of registered electric cars amounted to 7.5 thousand. As of February 1 this year, the total number of electric vehicles registered in the Republic of Kazakhstan reached 8.4 thousand. This is 9.2 times more compared to February 2023, when only 914 electric vehicles were registered,El.kz reports with reference to Energyprom.
A particularly noticeable increase in the number of passenger electric vehicles occurred from May to December of the previous year.
According to the Bureau of National Statistics of the ASP&D of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the total number of electric cars in February this year amounted to 8.7 thousand, which is 7.3 times more than a year earlier. Most of them are passenger cars. There are few electric trucks and electric buses in Kazakhstan – only about 300.
The increase in interest in electric vehicles over the past year is associated with the decision of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission to extend the tariff privilege for duty-free imports of electric vehicles until the end of 2025. This solution allows you to save up to 15% of the customs value of the car. Artur Miskaryan, director of the Agency for Monitoring and Analysis of the Automotive Market of the Republic of Kazakhstan, points out that the quota for Kazakhstan last year was set at 15,000 electric cars, but only half of them were used during the year.
Most electric vehicles in Kazakhstan are purchased by residents of the two main urban agglomerations. In particular, in Almaty, the number of registered passenger cars and commercial electric vehicles over the past year increased almost 9 times and reached 5 thousand. In the capital, the growth rate is also quite high, but the total volume of electric cars there is lower - about 1.1 thousand.
In other regions of the country, the number of electric car owners is also growing, but in absolute numbers, the growth is less noticeable. Last year, only a few electric vehicles were registered in many areas, and over the year their number has increased to only a few dozen
According to analysts from Freedom Finance Global, who conducted a study of the automotive market of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2023, the most popular model among electric cars imported into Kazakhstan is the Zeekr 001 sports model. This five-door hatchback is manufactured by the Chinese company Geely.
