A warning has been issued in Kazakhstan regarding a new scheme to hack into Telegram accounts, El.kz reports.
Users are receiving messages from "Telegram Support," claiming that a request to delete their account has been received.
Scammers tell users they have just 24 hours to cancel the deletion pressuring users with warnings that they could permanently lose their chats, files, contacts, and entire account.
To "save" the account, the user is prompted to click a button, follow a link, or open a Telegram bot. They are then asked to enter a confirmation code received via SMS or a messenger notification.
The Prosecutor General's Office warned that no such process for canceling account deletion through third-party websites or bots exists. By entering the code, the user is essentially handing over full access to their account to the fraudsters.
How to protect your account
Users are advised never to share confirmation codes or passwords with anyone. Do not enter Telegram credentials on third-party websites or in bots, even if the message appears urgent.
It is also highly recommended to enable two-step verification and regularly check "Active Sessions" in the "Devices" section of the app. If an unrecognized connection is found, it should be terminated immediately.
