New direct flight from Shanghai to Almaty to launch on July 4

Starting from July 4, 2025, a new direct flight between Shanghai and Almaty will be launched by China Eastern Airlines. According to the Almaty Tourism Department, the opening of this route will be a significant event that will contribute to the development of tourism, cultural exchange, and business ties between the two major cities, El.kz reports citing the press service of the city’s mayor office .
The flight is expected to bring representatives of the airline, journalists, and popular bloggers from China. Thanks to this event, millions of people in China will learn about the launch of the new route. Passengers arriving in Almaty will be greeted with a pleasant surprise — as part of the “Symbol of Almaty as a Gift” campaign organized by the city’s tourism department, each traveler will receive a souvenir.
“The new route is the result of agreements reached between the Almaty mayor office and the leadership of China Eastern Airlines in February 2025. Notably, this is the airline’s first destination in Central Asia,” the press service emphasized.
The launch of the flight will make Almaty even more accessible to travelers and business partners from China. In the first three months of 2025 alone, more than 20,900 tourists from China visited the city — an increase of 39.9% compared to the same period last year.
“Almaty is currently connected by direct flights to Beijing, Guangzhou, Xi’an, Urumqi, Hangzhou, and Sanya. The new route will increase the flight frequency between the two countries, which now exceeds 150 flights per month,” the statement reads.
