Deputies of the capital's maslikhat supported the renaming of Nur-Sultan to Astana, El.kz reports.

The decision was made at an extraordinary session on the renaming of the capital. It was attended by 25 deputies out of 31. The decision will be sent for consideration to the Republican Onomastic Commission under the Government.

"In world practice, there are such precedents when capitals and states were renamed back. Now, when we enter the New Kazakhstan, the new name of the capital is symbolic. As a native, I support the return of the name Astana to the city – it is known not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the world. This is a recognizable brand," Askar Smagulov, a deputy from the Ak Zhol party said.
