Legendary pilot-cosmonaut Talgat Musabayev passes away

Hero of Kazakhstan and three-time space traveler Talgat Musabayev has passed away at the age of 74, El.kz reports citing Aqorda press service.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his condolences to the family and loved ones of the cosmonaut.

In his telegram, the Head of State noted that Musabayev “brought glory to the nation through his heroic deeds” and “will forever be remembered by the people as an outstanding professional and patriot.”

Talgat Musabayev was born January 7, 1951 in the village Kargaly Zhambyl District, Almaty region, Kazakh SSR.

He graduated from the Riga Civil Aviation Engineers Institute, the Almaty Aeroclub, and the Aktobe Higher Flight School. He held a doctorate in technical sciences and was an academician of both the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and the International Academy of Astronautics.

In 1994, Musabayev made his first spaceflight aboard the Soyuz TM-19 spacecraft and served as a flight engineer on the Mir space station. In total, he flew to space three times.

In addition to his space missions, Musabayev held key positions in Kazakhstan’s aerospace sector. He headed the National Space Agency from 2007 to 2014, later chaired the Aerospace Committee, and served as a senator in the upper house of parliament from 2017 to 2023.

He was awarded Kazakhstan’s state honor “Halyk Kaharmany” (People’s Hero), the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, as well as the “Otan” Order, The Order of Merit for the Fatherland and the Order of Friendship of Peoples.
