Kazakhstan’s Turquoise Jewel

On his official social media accounts, Anton Shkaplerov published a photograph of Lake Alakol captured through the observation window of the International Space Station.

“Every time you fly over our planet, you are amazed at how amazing it is. This picture shows Kazakhstan’s Lake Alakol. From space, it resembles a huge turquoise pearl surrounded by snow-capped mountain ranges ”

The cosmonaut also noted that Lake Alakol is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, rich biodiversity, and its role as a key stopover site along international migratory bird flyways, including for the relict gull.

“From orbit, it is especially clear how harmoniously water, mountains and endless steppes combine on our planet. Such views once again remind us that the Earth is a truly unique and incredibly beautiful cosmic home that we must protect ”
