Kazakhstan’s men’s épée national team has claimed the country’s first-ever gold medal at the FIE World Fencing Championships. In the gold medal match, the Kazakh team defeated Ukraine, the recent bronze medalists at the European Fencing Championships, by a score of 45-40 following a closely contested bout, El.kz reports.
It is worth noting that at the 2025 World Fencing Championships in Georgia, Kazakhstan secured the bronze medal. One year later, the national team has achieved another landmark in the history of Kazakh fencing by reaching the top step of the podium at the sport’s premier international championship.
The athletes behind this historic achievement are Ruslan Kurbanov, Kirill Prokhodov, Yerlik Sertay and Vadim Sharlaimov.
The Championships are being held in Hong Kong, China, from 22 to 31 July. Kazakhstan’s route to the final was challenging. During the tournament, the team overcame Uzbekistan, Denmark and Finland. The quarter-final against Uzbekistan proved to be the most demanding encounter, with Kazakhstan trailing 11–9 and 22–20 before staging a successful comeback to secure victory. In the semi-final, Kazakhstan defeated Egypt 41–32.
Under the competition regulations, the World Championship-winning team will receive prize money of USD 50,000, while the runners-up and bronze medalists will receive USD 25,000 and USD 15,000, respectively.
