Kazakhstan to revive seismologist's profession
The training of seismologists will begin at the Kanysh Satpayev Kazakh National Research Technical University, El.kz reports.
At a briefing on the earthquake in Almaty, Director of the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research Daulet Sarsenbayev expressed concern about the lack of qualified seismologists in Kazakhstan. He noted that the problem lies in the lack of specialized training in this area in the country's educational institutions.
"By the government decree of 2022, on the basis of the order of state property and privatization of December 1, 2023, the Institute of Seismology and the Seismological Experimental and Methodological Expedition were reorganized by merging into the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research. Together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations, we are now reviving the specialty of seismology, which was not taught in higher educational institutions of our country," Daulet Sarsenbayev said.
Sarsenbayev mentioned that in the past, attempts have been made to solve this problem by attracting and retraining engineers, mining specialists, geologists and geophysicists. However, despite these measures, the need for qualified personnel is still relevant.
He also pointed out that work is currently underway on the preparation of documents for the opening of a specialization in seismology at the Kazakh National Research Technical University named after K. Satpayev.
