Kazakhstan successfully completes chairmanship of UN Disarmament Commission

Kazakhstan, as Chair of the Substantive Session of the 2023 United Nations Disarmament Commission, successfully fulfilled its mandate yesterday, El.kz cites MFA.

This session, under the chairmanship of Ambassador Akan Rakhmetullin, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN, was the culmination of a three-year cycle of work. It was under his stewardship, that the Commission, for the first time since 2017, finally succeeded in adopting recommendations on the practical implementation of confidence-building and transparency measures to prevent an arms race in outer space.

The Bureau of the Commission consisted of representatives from Australia, Argentina, Burundi, Namibia, Russia, Thailand and Ukraine as Vice-Chairs. Representatives from Jamaica and Hungary served as chairs of the Working Groups I (Nuclear Disarmament) and II (Security in Outer Space), respectively, of the Commission.

The UN member states highly appreciated the active engagement of Kazakhstan’s stewardship which enabled the adoption of compromise decisions by this important body of the World Organization.
