Kazakhstan risen to 72nd place in global InCites scientific ranking

Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek announced an improvement in Kazakhstan’s position in the global scientific ranking InCites for 2024, El.kz reports citing the minister’s Facebook post.

According to the minister, Kazakhstani scientists published 3,176 articles and reviews in journals indexed in the core collections of Web of Science—an increase of 20% compared to 2023, when 2,639 articles were published.

Based on this indicator, Kazakhstan rose from 75th to 72nd place in the global ranking.

“In 2024, Kazakhstani authors published 3,176 articles and reviews in journals from the core indexes of Web of Science, which is 20% more than in 2023 (2,639 articles).

According to this indicator, our country moved up to 72nd place (75th in 2023),” Sayasat Nurbek wrote on Facebook.

Kazakhstani scientists are most actively publishing in the field of natural sciences, with 1,872 articles (a 21% increase). In engineering and technology, 1,133 articles were published (a 20% increase); in medicine — 533 (a 19% increase); in agricultural and veterinary sciences — 205 (a 24% increase); in social sciences — 332 (a 3.1% increase); and in the humanities and arts — 94 (a 16% increase).

Among universities, Nazarbayev University leads with 834 articles, followed by Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (571), L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (391), Satbayev University (233), and S.D. Asfendiyarov Kazakh National Medical University (123).

Among research institutes, the largest contributions came from the Institute of Nuclear Physics (124 articles), the Institute of Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling (81), the National Center for Biotechnology (47), the Institute of Information and Computational Technologies (36), and the Institute of Combustion Problems (34).

“We have achieved the target value of Indicator 13 — Kazakhstan’s position in the InCites country ranking for the total number of articles in indexed scientific journals (2024 — 72nd place) as outlined in the Concept for the Development of Higher Education and Science.” the Minister also noted.

Kazakhstani authors were particularly active in MDPI journals, publishing 798 articles in 2024 — a 10% increase compared to the previous year. In terms of the share of publications in these journals among 163 countries, Kazakhstan ranks 8th.

The most popular journals among Kazakhstani researchers were: Scientific Reports, Applied Sciences-Basel, Sustainability, Molecules, IEEE Access, Energies, Materials, Polymers, Processes, and Heliyon.
