An Amur tiger named Amur has been released into the wild at the Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve. It is the second tiger to be reintroduced into its natural habitat in Kazakhstan, El.kz reports.
The tiger was released on October,31 following several months of preparation. During this period, Amur was kept in a specially designed acclimatisation enclosure under the supervision of specialists, who monitored its health and behaviour and assessed ability to hunt independently.
Prior to its release, the tiger underwent veterinary examinations and a series of assessments. Specialists confirmed that it is capable of hunting for food and responding appropriately to human presence. A satellite tracking collar was fitted to monitor its movements.
Amur has now joined a tigress named Ümit, who was released into the wild in late July. According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources it is already hunting independently and establishing itself within the reserve. Its movements are also being monitored using a satellite tracking collar.
Two other tiger cubs, which were brought to Kazakhstan alongside the adult tigers, remain under the supervision of specialists. They will be released into the wild once they have reached the appropriate age and demonstrated the necessary hunting skills.
