Kazakhstan officially approves principles of ecotourism

25.06.2025 16:49

For the first time in Kazakhstan, the principles of ecotourism have been officially established — this was announced by Minister of Tourism and Sports Yerbol Myrzabossynov at a Government meeting, El.kz reports citing the Kazakh Ministry of Tourism.

The work on updating the National Ecotourism Standard was carried out as part of the implementation of the national ecological campaign “Taza Kazakhstan”.

Previously, the country followed a standard adopted back in 2017. The updated document is part of a systemic transformation of the tourism industry and aims to strengthen environmental awareness and promote sustainable tourism practices.

According to the new standard:

• The principles of ecotourism have been defined and officially approved for the first time, based on international experience;

• Requirements for the activities of tourism companies and the quality of services provided have been clarified;

• Clear environmental criteria have been introduced — from sustainable transport and products to the protection of nature and cultural heritage;

• The document is based on the recommendations of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

The Minister emphasized that the updated standard should serve as a unified guideline for all participants in the tourism industry — from government bodies to small and medium-sized businesses. It will help ensure a balance between infrastructure development and the need to protect ecosystems.

Ecotourism development has been recognized as one of the priorities of state policy. Authorities expect that the new regulatory framework will boost the development of nature-based routes, eco-farms, ethno-villages, and other forms of responsible tourism, especially in regions with high natural potential.
