Kazakhstan has maintained its position among countries with very high human development, achieving the highest Human Development Index (HDI) ranking among the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Central Asia, El.kz reports citing Ranking.kz.
Kazakhstan ranked 60th globally in the latest Human Development Index. The assessment, conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), covers nearly 200 countries and territories.
Kazakhstan’s HDI reached 0.837, placing the country alongside Brunei Darussalam in the global ranking.
The Human Development Index is based on three key dimensions: life expectancy at birth, access to education, and gross national income (GNI) per capita. This internationally recognized methodology provides a broader assessment of human well-being and development than economic indicators alone.
Life expectancy at birth in Kazakhstan reached 74.4 years, surpassing the corresponding indicator for the Russian Federation and matching that of Belarus.
The expected years of schooling in Kazakhstan stand at 14 years, while the mean years of schooling for the adult population exceed 12 years.
Kazakhstan’s gross national income (GNI) per capita, measured in purchasing power parity (PPP)terms, was estimated at nearly USD 31,000. This indicator reflects the purchasing capacity of income after adjusting for differences in price levels across countries.
Among the CIS member states, the Russian Federation ranked closest to Kazakhstan, placing 64thglobally. It was followed by Belarus and Armenia, both of which also remained in the category of countries with very high human development.
Since the early 1990s, Kazakhstan’s Human Development Index has increased by 21.5%. Following a temporary decline during the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s HDI has recovered and reached its highest level since records began.
Other Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan, ranked below Kazakhstan. Tajikistan was classified among countries with medium human development.
