On June 18, 2025, the Committee of Ministers of Council of Europe's officially approved Kazakhstan's application to join the Council of Europe Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan, El.kz reports.

As explained by the press service of the supervisory authority, the initiative was proposed by the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan and received support from the European community.

The participation of our country in this Convention will allow the law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan to obtain evidence in criminal cases, recover assets unlawfully taken abroad, and enhance the effectiveness of cooperation with 46 European states," the Prosecutor General's Office noted.

Moreover, as emphasized by the agency, Kazakhstan will no longer need to conclude separate bilateral agreements with each European country to receive legal assistance in criminal cases.

"Joining this international document will free Kazakhstan from the need to conclude bilateral agreements in the field of combating crime with each European country separately," the press service emphasized.

It is noted that previous attempts to join the Convention were made over 20 years ago; however, Kazakhstan's applications were rejected due to objections from several member states of the Council of Europe.

The new step became possible thanks to systematic diplomatic and legal work.

"Receiving such an invitation indicates the trust of the European community in the criminal justice system of Kazakhstan, the rule of law within it, and the respect for human rights and freedoms," the Prosecutor General's Office stated.

“This is the result of many years of diligent work by Kazakhstani prosecutors and diplomats."

Joining the Convention fits into the state's policy of strengthening legality through international cooperation within the framework of the concept of 'Law and Order'.
