Developers of the prtner.ai service have introduced Medeo, a new font family designed for the languages of Kazakhstan and other countries in the region. It unites three font variants, supports both Cyrillic and Latin scripts, and is available for free commercial use, El.kz reports citing the project’s creators.
Medeo is based on the popular Inter and Geist typefaces, which are widely used in website development and digital interface design. The developers have combined their distinctive features, refined character spacing, and adapted the font family for multilingual projects.
Medeo comprises three distinct variants. The standard font is intended for body text, websites, and apps. Medeo Mono features monospaced characters, making it suitable for source code, tables, and price displays. Medeo Pixel uses a pixel-based design and is intended for digital displays, posters, and user interface design.
Particular attention has been paid to supporting national languages. The font includes characters for Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen, Azerbaijani, Turkish, and English. Kazakh is supported in both the Cyrillic script and the version of the Latin alphabet adopted in 2021.
For Medeo Pixel, the Cyrillic characters were designed from scratch, as they were not available in the original Geist Pixel typeface. The developers also created a custom design for the Kazakhstani tenge symbol.
According to the developers, 55,216 character pairs were tested across different font weights. This testing is necessary to prevent characters from overlapping and to ensure that spacing remains visually balanced.
Another feature of Medeo is its support for tabular figures in the standard font. This ensures consistent alignment of numerical values in tables, price lists, and financial user interfaces.
The font family is distributed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. This permits free use on websites, in mobile applications, in print publications, and in commercial projects, subject to the terms of the licence.
The developers have made TTF files available for installation on computers and have also provided for integration via npm for use in web development.
