Kazakhstan expands its participation in UN peacekeeping missions

Colonel General Ruslan Zhaksylykov held talks with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the country's expanded peacekeeping participation, El.kz reports citing the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The meeting took place within the framework of the UN Ministerial Conference held in Berlin. The parties discussed new formats for interaction between the Kazakh defense ministry and the UN Secretariat. The minister conducted negotiations with Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Atul Khare — senior representatives of the leadership of the United Nations.

According to Ruslan Zhaksylykov, Kazakhstan has been systematically developing its peacekeeping direction since 2014. During this time, the country has gone through all key stages — from the participation of observers to the formation of a full-fledged national contingent with equipment, weapons, and infrastructure.

Currently, according to the decision approved by Parliament, Kazakhstan can send its servicemen to 10 different UN peacekeeping operations. In addition to already involved observers and staff officers, the Armed Forces are ready to form specialized units.

An important part of the negotiations was the discussion of the role of the Peacekeeping Operations Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This unique educational institution in the Central Asian region trains military personnel according to UN-certified programs. The Center is recognized as an international partner in the training of peacekeeping personnel.

The minister also emphasized Kazakhstan's readiness to expand cooperation in other areas related to maintaining peace — including logistics, medicine, engineering support, and personnel training.

Zhaksylykov expressed gratitude to the UN representatives for their trust and support of Kazakhstan's initiatives, emphasizing that the country views peacekeeping as an integral part of its foreign policy mission.
