Kazakhstan becomes Central Asia’s leader in number of universities featured in THE global ranking

Kazakh universities have entered the global top list, with Nazarbayev University making its debut in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings,El.kz reports citing BAQ.KZ.

Kazakhstan has strengthened its leadership among Central Asian and Caucasus countries by the number of universities included in the THE World University Rankings 2026. Five Kazakh universities made it to the prestigious list, with Nazarbayev University entering the top 500 for the first time.

According to the ranking, Nazarbayev University was placed in the 401–500 range — the best result in the history of Kazakhstan’s higher education. The Al-Farabi Kazakh National University ranked second among Kazakh institutions, maintaining its position in the 1201–1500 band. Other Kazakh universities featured in the ranking include the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Satbayev University, and the Kazakh Research and Agrarian University.

Across the Central Asia and Caucasus region, 17 universities from five countries were included in the ranking — a record number. Kazakhstan emerged as the most represented nation, ahead of Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Georgia.

For comparison, Uzbekistan had four universities on the list, including the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanization Engineers, which entered the top 600 for the first time. Four Azerbaijani universities are represented in the rankings, doubling the number from last year, while Georgia was represented by three institutions.
