The Prosecutor General's Office, with the assistance of the OSCE Programme Office, held an international scientific and practical conference on civil confiscation as a key mechanism for asset recovery, El.kz reports with reference to the press service of the department.

Prosecutor General Berik Asylov, chairman of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Kazakhstan Askhat Zhumagali and Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Astana, Ambassador Volker Frobarth, expressed hope that the conference will become an important platform for the exchange of experience and knowledge.

"The practice of applying the instrument of civil confiscation and the laws of different countries differ, but the goal is the same - to ensure the interests of the state," said Prosecutor General Berik Asylov.

The event was attended by representatives of the OSCE and UNODC, the International Bar Association (UK), Basel Institute on Governance (Switzerland), leading foreign experts from Bulgaria, Spain and Portugal, heads and academics of the Academies of Justice, Law Enforcement and Financial Monitoring, as well as employees of relevant government agencies.

The speakers highlighted topical issues of the application of civil confiscation, taking into account the experience of other countries, as well as the main provisions of the Law on Asset Recovery, including those regulating the procedure for filing claims for unexplained wealth. International experts expressed their position on the effectiveness of the civil confiscation procedure to combat corruption used around the world.

On the sidelines of the conference, a bilateral meeting was held between the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Astana. The parties expressed their readiness to strengthen further cooperation in the implementation of initiatives to counter modern challenges and threats, including terrorism and human trafficking, cyber and drug-related crime, as well as the fight against corruption.
