A Kazakh AI startup, Defect AI, has been accepted into the StartX accelerator at Stanford University. In this article El.kz explores why it attracted attention at one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Silicon Valley

Getting into StartX is a challenge thousands of teams from around the world attempt each year. The team applied four times. Finally, project had been applied successfully only after several cycles of testing, refining of product design and business model strategies.

Artificial Intelligence vs. medical bureaucracy

Defect AI is developing an intelligent platform for medical organizations in Kazakhstan. The system analyzes doctors’ notes and checks them for compliance with Ministry of Health regulations and national clinical protocols.

The platform processes documents in seconds, reducing manual review time by up to 95%. Doctors spend less time on paperwork and more time with patients.

To date, the system has analyzed tens of millions of medical records. More than 30 clinics across the country including major networks are already using the product.

The company is certified under ISO 27001 and complies with HIPAA requirements. In medical IT, this is not a formality but a matter of trust.

Smart search instead of multi-page regulations

The platform includes an intelligent search feature that allows doctors to receive treatment guidance in seconds based on official documents. Instead of reading dozens of pages of regulations, specialists get a clear reference.

The idea was partly inspired by the U.S. platform Open Evidence. While at Stanford, the team met with its founder and discussed the architecture of similar solutions.

Internationally, the project operates under the brand Rette. The name reflects the core idea: systematizing processes through AI.

5 trln dollars and a new competitive landscape

The U.S. healthcare system is the largest in the world, valued at approximately  5 trln dollars annually and the rules of the game are fundamentally different.

There are thousands of insurance organizations, the regulatory environment is more complex, and product requirements are higher.

At the end of 2025, the company closed its first investment round. The next fundraising stage is planned for mid-spring 2026.

The team is currently onboarding its first U.S. clients and adapting the platform to local regulatory requirements.

A Kazakhstan-based team with global expertise

Most of the specialists work in Kazakhstan, while team members are also based in four other countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom.

The team includes engineers with experience at Meta, Google, Microsoft.

Through collaboration with Stanford University, the startup regularly consults with professors working at the forefront of medical AI research.

Astana Hub, NU, and support ecosystem

Defect AI is a member of  Astana Hub.

Support from the hub and investments from Astana Hub Ventures have become part of the project’s growth infrastructure.

Selection for the spring StartX was supported by Astana Business Campus and NU. Participation was made possible through a platinum agreement between StartX and Astana Business Campus, which is part of NU Impact Foundation ecosystem.

Previously, the project also completed the Silicon Valley Residency program implemented by the revelant ministry in partnership with regional stakeholders.

Four attempt and a new benchmark

Defect AI co-founder Sanzhar Myrzagalym acknowledges that acceptance into StartX is the result of persistence. The team applied four times before receiving approval.

According to him, the program’s culture is built around community: every founder not only receives support but is also expected to contribute to the growth of others.

Getting into StartX  is a new stage, where a Kazakh AI product is tested not by a local market, but by global competition.
