Director Steven Soderbergh presented the documentary film John Lennon: The Last Interview at the Cannes Film Festival. The film was created using AI, El.kz reports.
The documentary is based on an interview that John Lennon and Yoko Ono gave on December 8, 1980, in their apartment just hours before the musician’s death.
According to Soderbergh, more than 10% of the scenes were created using AI, although the director emphasized that he did not use deepfakes.
The algorithms were used to visualize the ideas and reflections of Lennon and Ono. In one AI-generated scene, crying babies dressed in 1960s clothing and Cro-Magnons appear during a discussion about gender inequality.
Soderbergh said he views such sequences more as a “dream space” rather than an attempt to recreate reality. According to him, working with AI requires serious human oversight and a deep understanding of context.
Despite interest in the experiment, the film received mixed reviews from critics. Many reviewers felt that the AI-generated segments seemed out of place and weakened the authenticity of the archival story. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 53% rating.
