Elena Rybakina has won the US Open title, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. The Kazakhstani tennis player faced the defending champion in the decisive match in New York and secured victory in three sets, 6–4, 5–7, 6–2, El.kz reports.
For Rybakina, this is her third Grand Slam title. Earlier this season, she won the Australian Open, where she also faced Sabalenka in the final.
A new status
For her victory in New York, Rybakina received a record prize of5.5 mln dollars for the women’s singles competition. This achievement marked another milestone at a tournament that capped her remarkable season-long rise from her victory in Melbourne to becoming the world No. 1.
Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated Elena Rybakina on her victory at the US Open Tennis Championships.
“This outstanding achievement is a vivid confirmation that you rightfully earned the title of world No. 1. Once again, you have demonstrated true professionalism, determination and exemplary conduct on the court. The entire nation of Kazakhstan takes pride in your achievements! May this impressive victory inspire you to achieve further sporting successes, and may your skill serve as an example to all young tennis players in Kazakhstan,” the congratulatory message stated.
Following the WTA rankings update on Monday, Rybakina will officially become the world No. 1.
