A punch to the chest, which teenagers may regard as a joke or a way to demonstrate their strength, can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office has warned of the dangers of such behaviour among minors, El.kz reports.
According to the agency, even in the absence of bruising or other visible injuries, a forceful punch to the chest can, in rare cases, trigger a life-threatening heart rhythm disturbance.
Why a Blow to the Chest Can Be Fatal
In medical terminology, this condition is known as commotio cordis. It occurs when a mechanical impact to the chest triggers a dangerous heart rhythm disturbance that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.
The particular danger lies in the fact that there may be no visible signs of serious injury. Nevertheless, the consequences of even a single blow can be irreversible.
The Prosecutor General’s Office emphasises that such actions are unacceptable, whether carried out as a joke, in the course of a dispute or to test someone’s endurance:
“The consequences can be tragic”
The agency also warns that a teenager who delivers such a punch may face serious legal consequences.
How to Provide First Aid
If a person loses consciousness and is no longer breathing normally after being struck in the chest, emergency services must be called immediately by dialling 112.
Until medical personnel arrive, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should be initiated. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, it should be used in accordance with the device’s voice prompts.
“Do not strike anyone in the chest! Even a single blow can stop the heart,” Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General’s Office urged.
