A Czech indie game, Scarlet Deer Inn, has attracted widespread attention for its distinctive visual style: its characters do not merely appear embroidered they are created using actual hand embroidery, El.kz reports.
The project was developed by Czech couple Lukáš Navrátil and Eva Navratilova who spent 7 years bringing the game to life. Throughout the development process, the team revised the artistic direction several times before ultimately adopting an unconventional approach: replacing traditional hand-drawn animation with embroidered artwork.
Each animation frame was initially designed digitally before being converted into embroidery machine software and stitched onto fabric. The completed embroidered pieces were then scanned and digitally processed into in-game sprites. Producing the main character alone required hundreds of individually embroidered animation frames. According to Eva Navrátilová, the team deliberately chose not to simplify the production process despite its complexity and labor-intensive nature.
“We have always loved craftsmanship and handmade creations. Some artists produce remarkable embroidered animations, but no one had ever created a full-fledged video game using this technique,” Eva Navrátil said in an interview with GamesRadar.
As a result, the developers have produced what they describe as the world’s first video game featuring fully embroidered animated characters.
Scarlet Deer Inn is now available on Steam, where it has received nearly 90% positive user reviews. A free demo version is also available for players interested in exploring the project’s distinctive artistic approach.
