The winners of the “Mereili Otbasy – 2026” National Competition were announced in Astana. Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan Arman Kyrykbayev presented awards to 20 families representing different regions of the country. The winning families are distinguished by mutual respect, a strong work ethic, the continuity of family traditions across generations, and a responsible approach to raising children.

The ceremony was attended by members of the National Commission for Women’s Affairs and Family and Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, representatives of the National Kurultai, Kazakhstan Halyk Keneci, the Council of Mothers and the Union of Fathers. Prominent public figures were also among the distinguished guests.

The Family as the Foundation of Upbringing

The Minister highlighted the significance of the competition in the context of the Address of the Head of State to the People of Kazakhstan. In his Address, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the importance of developing human potential and creating conditions for the comprehensive development of the younger generation. Arman Kyrykbayev noted that “the family plays a particularly important role in this effort, as it is where the foundations of upbringing are laid and essential life values are shaped.”

According to the Minister, each winning family has a story rooted in life experience and wisdom, commitment to family traditions and good deeds. Their contributions and civic initiatives help young people recognise the value of family, the importance of mutual respect and their responsibility for the country’s future. Arman Kyrykbayev emphasised that the life journeys of these families should serve as role models for the younger generation.

Shared Responsibility of Families and Schools

In his Address, the President placed particular emphasis on human capital development and fostering a responsible and conscientious generation. The Head of State highlighted the shared responsibility of families, schools, teachers and students themselves for children’s upbringing and the development of their life values and guiding principles.

Against this backdrop, strengthening the institution of the family, supporting responsible parenthood and fostering intergenerational continuity are becoming increasingly important priorities for society. The “Mereili Otbasy” competition brings together families whose life journeys reflect the finest traditions of Kazakhstani society.

Awards and History of the Competition

The award recipients include large families, adoptive families, as well as working and creative dynasties. Families actively involved in public life and the development of their regions were also recognised. Each winning family received an honorary statuette and a certificate worth 2 million tenge.

The “Mereili Otbasy” National Competition has been held annually since 2014. Its objectives are to strengthen family, spiritual and moral values and enhance the status of the family in society.

Over the years, more than 20,000 families from across the country have taken part in the competition. The initiative promotes the sharing of best practices in child-rearing and encourages respect for family traditions.
