António Guterres: Digital technology is an existential threat

Digital technologies is an existential threat, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at the SCO+ meeting in Astana,El.kz reports.

"AI has great potential to accelerate sustainable development for the benefit of all," said António Guterres.

Artificial intelligence also exacerbates power imbalances, undermining human rights and exacerbating tensions and conflicts, he said.

"We urgently need to ensure the full engagement of governments, working with technology companies, academia, civil society, to agree on risk management systems for artificial intelligence, as well as on harm monitoring and mitigation," said António Guterres.

In this regard, the UN Secretary-General outlined five priority areas for ensuring the safe use of artificial intelligence. First, it is the creation of an international scientific group on artificial intelligence. Secondly, it is the holding of regular political dialogue between national, regional and sectoral representatives. Thirdly, it is the development of common ethical norms and standards for the protection of human rights, as well as ensuring security and interoperability in our activities. Fourthly, these are the principles and mechanisms for managing data used to train artificial intelligence algorithms. Fifthly, it is to support developing countries, to develop their capacity and to establish a global fund for this purpose.
