On September 1, Kazakhstan launched a pilot of a national education platform powered by AI. Ten small-enrolment schools in Pavlodar and Kyzylorda regions were the first to be connected to the platform, El.kz reports citing the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development.
The project was launched under the instructions of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. In May, the Head of State signed a decree providing for the integration of AI technologies into the secondary education system.
The first lesson for the pilot participants was opened by Acting Deputy PM - Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev. He noted that schoolchildren from the two regions were the first in the country to begin working with the new national platform.
Teachers from Astana conduct live lessons from a dedicated studio at the National Center for Professional Development “Örleu”, while students join the lessons from their respective schools.
Local teachers remain with the students and assist with lesson delivery and learning activities. Prior to the launch of the project, teachers received specialized training on the use of the platform and the new teaching format.
The system integrates video-based instruction, educational materials, and artificial intelligence tools. It is primarily designed for small rural schools, where the availability of teachers for individual subjects is often limited.
The developers expect that remote access to teachers, combined with AI-enabled tools, will expand rural students’ access to high-quality subject-specific instruction. One of the stated objectives of the pilot is to reduce disparities in the quality of education between urban schools and small-enrolment rural schools.
The project was developed taking into account recommendations from artificial intelligence expert Kai-Fu Lee. He previously participated in discussions on the application of AI in Kazakhstan’s education system and was among the international experts engaged in this work.
The platform is being developed by the Ministry of Education in cooperation with Q.AI and 01.AI. Following completion of the pilot phase, the system is expected to be further enhanced based on learning outcomes and feedback from teachers and students.
