The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially commenced on 19 July in Busan, Republic of Korea, and will continue till 29 July.
President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae-myung and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany attended the opening ceremony.
The session has brought together approximately 3,000 participants representing the 196 States Parties to the UNESCO Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, as well as representatives of international organizations and the global expert community.
During the session, the World Heritage Committee will examine 30 new nominations for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in addition to reviewing 147 State of Conservation reportsconcerning properties already inscribed on the List.
The delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan is actively participating in the session in its capacity as a member of the World Heritage Committee.
The Committee is expected to consider Kazakhstan’s nomination entitled “The Rock Mosques of Mangystau and Associated Sacred Sites.”
It should be recalled that, during the meeting of the National Kurultai held in Atyrau, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the relevant authorities to initiate the process of nominating the unique underground mosques of the Mangystau Region for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
