– At the plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly a resolution entitled “Addressing the Legacy of Nuclear Weapons: Providing Victim Assistance and Environmental Remediation to States Affected by the Use or Testing of Nuclear Weapons.” has been adopted for the first time, El.kz cites MFA.
The resolution was adopted on the initiative of Kazakhstan and Kiribati, which suffered from the negative consequences of nuclear tests. It is aimed at creating a basis for international cooperation and assistance in eliminating damage to states on whose territory nuclear weapons tests were carried out in the past.
The document also provides for the possibility of assessing the consequences of nuclear tests, practical and financial assistance to victims and for the restoration of areas contaminated by radiation.
The resolution was co-sponsored by 41 UN Member States from all regions of the world, indicating recognition of the importance of the problem.
The initiative was highly appreciated by Member States and the expert community.
