South Korean police today launched an investigation into the instant messaging platform Telegram in connection with crimes involving so-called “deepfakes” – AI-generated videos that synthesize human images – of a sexual nature, El.kz cites agenzianova.com.
The investigation aims to determine whether Telegram in any way facilitated the distribution of sexually explicit content based on deepfakes, according to a source from the Korean National Bureau of Investigation quoted by the Yonhap news agency.
The news of the launch of the investigation follows a few days after the arrest in France of the founder Pavel Durov as part of an investigation into fraudulent transactions carried out on the platform.
