Shezhire in AI era: Maksat Zhabagin on preserving national digital heritageThis viral photo was captured by photographer Hisa Matsumura along the coast of San’in Kaigan Geopark in western Japan.
Although many social media posts have labeled it “Hokkaido Beach,” the scene is found at the Tottori Sand Dunes, overlooking the Sea of Japan.
During winter, heavy snowfall blankets the dunes while the ocean remains ice-free, creating a stunning contrast between the white snow and the deep blue water.
This rare phenomenon is temporary and can usually be seen between January and February, when cold temperatures combine with ocean currents that keep the sea from freezing.
Why this phenomenon occurs
This unusual phenomenon is driven by the climatic conditions of East Asia. Cold air masses originating in Siberia pass over the relatively warm Sea of Japan, absorb significant moisture, and generate heavy snowfall along the western coast of Honshu Island.
As a result, the vast Tottori Sand Dunes undergo a dramatic transformation within just a few hours. In summer, they resemble a genuine desert landscape, while in winter they become a snow-covered plain extending to the shoreline, where it meets the sea.
Why capturing this photo is so difficult
unique natural landscape exists only for a brief period. The formation of a snow-covered desert requires a precise combination of meteorological conditions, including suitable air temperatures, wind direction, and snowfall.
For this reason, the renowned photograph by Japanese photographer Hisa Matsumura is regarded as an exceptional achievement. Capturing the moment when snow, sand, and the sea align to create a perfectly balanced composition requires the simultaneous convergence of several natural factors.
