Silver in Budapest: Yerlik Sertay reaches fencing Grand Prix final

Kazakhstani epee fencer Yerlik Sertay secured the silver medal at the 2026 Westend Epee Grand Prix in Budapest,El.kz reports.

This marks one of the national team’s strongest recent performances on the international stage.

In the group stage, Yerlik Sertay went undefeated, winning all six of his bouts to advance to the knockout rounds.

In the quarterfinals, Kazakh athlete defeated Jakub Jurka of the Czech Republic with a score of 15:9.

Sertay also defeated  Hungary’s Gergely Siklósi, who currently holds the number two spot in the world rankings.

In the semifinals, the Kazakhstani fencer defeated Ian Hauri of Switzerland with a score of 15:12.

The final bout

In the final, Sertay lost to Hungary’s David Nagy, the Paris 2024 Olympic champion in team epee.

The Fencing Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious international competitions, bringing together the world's top-ranked epeeists. Yerlik Sertay’s silver medal is one of the highest individual achievements for Kazakhstani fencing at this level.

It is also worth noting that Kazakhstan is set to host a stage of the Fencing World Cup for the first time in the near future.
