At the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), held in Astana, it was decided to appoint Kazakhstan’s Nurlan Yermekbayev to the post of SCO Secretary General for the period 2025-2027, El.kz reports.
He is currently serving as Deputy Secretary-General of the SCO.
Born in 1963 in Shymkent, Nurlan Yermekbayev speaks Kazakh, Russian, English and Chinese.
During his career, Yermekbayev was a member of the USSR military mission in the People's Republic of Angola.
Yermekbayev worked as counselor at the Kazakh Embassy in China, deputy foreign minister, assistant to the president, secretary of the Security Council, as well as defence minister.
