Sakura and waterfalls: Japanese park to appear in Shymkent

Japanese-style public space “Ken Baba” is set to open in Shymkent city  in June 2026 , El.kz reports.

The park will be designed as a Japanese garden with an emphasis on natural harmony. The project includes water features, relaxation areas, and spaces for meditation.

Ken Baba Park will be decorated in a Japanese style. Plans include planting sakura trees, installing small architectural forms, creating water elements, quiet rest areas, and meditation spaces.

The grounds will feature sakura alleys, decorative gazebos, a waterfall. A so-called "pink square" and dedicated locations for events are also planned.

The park will be divided into seven thematic sections. At the same time, a portion of the existing greenery will be preserved.

New plant species, including bamboo and sakura, will be added to the existing oak trees. Some of the trees are planned to be imported directly from Japan.

Walking paths and the main landscape elements are already being formed on-site.

"Ken Baba" remains one of the city's oldest recreational zones and is intended to be used specifically as a public space.

The park's renovation reflects a general shift in urban development: moving away from commercial sites toward comfortable, eco-friendly, and accessible spaces for all residents.
