For the first time in Kazakhstan’s history, one of the world’s largest Counter-Strike 2 championships — PGL Major Astana 2025 — was held in Astana. This event is being compared to the Olympics in the world of esports. The prize pool amounted to $1.25 million, and the broadcasts drew tens of millions of viewers worldwide. Thousands of fans traveled to the capital to attend the event, El.kz reports.
Kazakhstan became the first country in Central Asia to host a tournament of this caliber. It not only boosted the country’s recognition on the global esports map but also gave a powerful push to the development of the entire industry within Kazakhstan.
Participants and guests praised the high level of organization, with Astana being compared to top venues in Europe and the United States.
Since 2018, esports has been officially recognized as a sport in Kazakhstan. The Qazaq Cybersport Federation is active, student tournaments are regularly held, local teams are being formed, and Kazakhstani players consistently participate in international competitions.
One of the most well-known figures is Abay Khasenov, better known by his nickname “HObbit” — a professional Counter-Strike player. He won the PGL Major Kraków 2017 tournament as a member of Gambit Esports.
