OSCE/ODIHR observers praise electoral reform in Kazakhstan

The interim report of the Observation Mission for the upcoming elections to the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan was told by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights during a briefing by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Aibek Smadiyarov, El.kz reports with reference to MFA.

On March 3, 2023, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights published the interim report of the Observation Mission for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

In the current report, the experts positively assessed the reform of the electoral system implemented in Kazakhstan, stressing that some of its provisions are in line with the previous recommendations of the ODIHR. In particular, this is a reduction in the electoral threshold, the introduction of a fully elected Mazhilis by direct voting, as well as the softening of the requirements for the registration of parties," the report said.

In addition, the work of the CEC in organizing elections is positively assessed and a lively election campaign is noted, especially on the Internet and in single-mandate constituencies with a large number of candidates.
