New plant species discovered in Kazakhstan

A new species of Euphorbia was discovered during a scientific expedition in the Markakol area of E Kazakhstan. The discovery was made by staff of the Katon-Karagay State National Nature Park in cooperation with scientists from Altai State University, El.kz reports.

Where the new species was found

The plant was discovered during an expedition conducted by the Scientific Department of the Katon-Karagay State National Nature Park in East Kazakhstan. The research was carried out in the Markakol area, which forms part of one of the most valuable natural complexes of the Kazakh Altai.

According to the official account of the Katon-Karagay National Park, the scientific study of the discovery was prepared by Gleb Bolbotov, Senior Researcher at the Department of Science, Environmental Monitoring and Information of the Katon-Karagay State National Nature Park, together with colleagues from Altai State University in Barnaul. The findings were published in a scientific article.

The plant itself was first discovered last year during fieldwork. Following examination of the specimens and the necessary scientific studies, the researchers confirmed that it represented a previously undescribed species.

What is known about the new plant

The new species belongs to the genus Euphorbia L. s. l., commonly known as spurge. The genus is one of the largest among flowering plants and comprises more than 2,000 species.

Over 40 representatives of this genus had previously been recorded within the Altai Mountain region. The description of an additional species expands scientific knowledge of the region’s floristic diversity.

The new species was named in honour of Dmitry Geltman, Doctor of Biological Sciences and a specialist in the taxonomy of the genus Euphorbia. The name recognises the scientist’s contribution to the study of this group of plants.

Why the discovery is important

The Kazakh Altai is characterised by a high level of plant diversity. New botanical discoveries therefore contribute to a more accurate assessment of the composition of the local flora. For protected areas, such research also provides additional information on the condition of natural ecosystems.

The work carried out by specialists of the Katon-Karagay National Park demonstrates that scientific expeditions can help identify species that had not previously been documented in botanical studies of the region. The published description of the new spurge species adds to the body of scientific knowledge on the biodiversity of the Kazakh Altai.

For the national park itself, such research is of practical importance. The data obtained may be used for continued monitoring of vegetation cover and for the study of rare plant species occurring within the protected area.

Findings of the expedition
