Kazakh FM hosts meeting with UN Deputy Secretary General

Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu held talks with UN Deputy Secretary-General, Head of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office (CTO) Vladimir Voronkov. The Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (UN CTED) UN Security Council Natalia Herman also attended the meeting, El.kz cites MFA.

The parties discussed regional security issues, the situation in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan's humanitarian operations “Zhusan” and “Rusafa”, Kazakhstan's interaction with the CTO and the UN CTED,  bbcthe UN's programmatic support to the Central Asian states on combating terrorism, preventing and countering violent extremism, as well as the initiative of Kazakhstan to establish UN regional center in Almaty for the goals of sustainable development in Central Asia and Afghanistan, El.kz cites MFA.

On the same day, a briefing for the diplomatic corps and international organizations accredited in the Republic of Kazakhstan was held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the chairmanship of Ambassador-at-Large the Foreign Ministry Talgat Kaliev and UN Deputy Secretary-General Voronkov. The event was aimed to raising awareness about the work of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office and helping Central Asian states to counter new challenges and threats.

The visit of high-ranking UN representatives is timed to coincide with their participation in the Central Asian Forum on Security and Cooperation, which will be held on July 13-14 this year in Astana.
