Japanese gardens to be developed in two Kazakhstani cities

A new Japanese garden will be developed in Almaty, featuring a bamboo grove, a waterfall, a tea house, and a dedicated meditation area. A similar project is already underway in Shymkent, where Ken Baba Park is being renovated in the Japanese style, El.kz reports.

The new green public space in Almaty will be located at the intersection of Satpayev and Shagabutdinov Streets. According to Almaty Kurylys, the 2.5-hectare site was previously designated for the construction of a residential complex.

Bamboo grove and tea house in Almaty

The garden’s concept envisages a tranquil public space incorporating elements of traditional Japanese landscape design. The site will feature an artificial pond with a cascading waterfall, a rock garden, and a bamboo grove.

A tea house, gazebos, and a dedicated meditation area will also be constructed for visitors. Certain sections of the site will be designated for quiet recreation and relaxation.

Landscaping will be one of the key components of the project. A total of 337 trees are planned to be planted across the site.

They will be complemented by nearly 6,000 shrubs. Preparatory and demolition works are currently underway at the site.

Construction of the Japanese garden is scheduled for completion in December 2026.

Another Japanese garden in Shymkent

Earlier, El.kz reported on the large-scale redevelopment of Ken Baba Park in Shymkent. Following the transfer of the site into state ownership, the authorities decided to develop a public space in the Japanese style.

The project includes a waterfall, ponds with water lilies, decorative gazebos, and designated meditation areas.

Cherry blossom avenues will be among the key landscaping features. Some of the trees and other plants intended for the park were planned to be sourced from Japan.
