In Kazakhstan, methods that until recently were associated with foreign detective movies have become part of the everyday work of forensic experts. High-tech equipment and expert techniques now make it possible to solve even long-unsolved crimes,El.kz reports.
According to Department Head Sergey Stikheyev, modern laboratories of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are fully equipped with everything necessary.
Forensic specialists must detect and properly collect even invisible fragments in order to obtain reliable examination results.
One of the key units of the agency remains the molecular genetics laboratory. It carries out two main types of work: maintaining forensic DNA records of persons who have committed serious crimes, and examining traces collected at crime scenes.
The establishment of such a research center has significantly strengthened the capabilities of the operational forensic service. This year alone, over 8,000 crimes were solved.
Technological modernization has also made it possible to return to cold cases. According to Stikheyev, specialists reviewed old materials and compared them with updated DNA databases. As a result, a high-profile crime committed in the Karaganda region in 2006 was solved only now. At that time, a 70-year-old woman became a victim of murder and sexual assault, and the traces found were insufficient. After a repeat examination of the biological materials, the suspect was identified — a man who is now 55 years old and was already serving time in prison.
Experts explain that proper collection of evidence allow materials to remain suitable for examination for decades. Special storage chambers ensure stable temperature, humidity, and security, while compliance with standards is monitored by specialists. Almost every crime-scene inspection today is conducted with the participation of a forensic expert, and in 97% of cases trace evidence is successfully obtained thanks to modern equipment.
