Head of State instructs to develop sugar industry

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made such an instruction during a speech at an expanded government meeting, El.kz reports.

"The Ministry of Agriculture plans to increase the share of shugar beet from 7 to 43 % by 2026. However, over the past four years, the area of sugar beet has decreased by a third. We are 90% dependent on imported sugar. Here we can refer to the decisions within the framework of the EAEU, but this, in any case, is a serious miscalculation of the government. So, they did not defend the position of the state. The government urgently needs to develop a separate sectoral project for the development of the sugar industry. The goal is a significant reduction in import dependence, a gradual transition to self-sufficiency. Interest from domestic and foreign investors in this industry is quite high, the right approaches are needed. This is a matter of principle, including domestic political significance," the President said.
