Next year, a new National Scientific Oncology Center (NREC) will be opened in Astana, equipped with advanced high-tech equipment, which will be presented in Kazakhstan for the first time. The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alikhan Smailov, visited the construction site and got acquainted with the construction of this important medical institution, El.kz reports with reference to the press service of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The new center is a low-cost investment project in which leading international companies from Switzerland and the United States are participating. At the moment, the construction work is 90% complete. In particular, a medical and diagnostic building with 210 beds was built, including radiation and nuclear medicine centers, as well as a proton therapy center.

Currently, the supply, commissioning and testing of medical equipment are being carried out. The new medical facility is planned to carry out radionuclide diagnostics for about 6 thousand patients per year, produce radiopharmaceuticals and provide radionuclide therapy. In addition, a proton center will begin its work in this institution, which will be the first such center in the post-Soviet space.

During his visit to the new medical center, the Prime Minister noted that more than 37,000 cases of cancer and over 13,000 deaths are registered annually in the republic.

"To improve the situation, we are building a National Scientific Oncology Center in Astana. It's a complex object. In order for it to meet international standards, an international company with relevant experience was involved in the construction," Alikhan Smailov said.

The Head of Government instructed the Ministry of Health, together with the general contractor, to ensure the commissioning of the facility with the launch of the proton therapy center by August 1, 2024.

Recall that in early October of this year, Alikhan Smailov signed a government decree approving the Comprehensive Plan to Combat Cancer for 2023-2027.
