Astana student creates platform for calculating personal water consumption

A 10th-grade student has developed a digital tool that helps estimate how much water a person consumes in their daily life. The project has already received support at the ministerial level, the El.kz reports citing the press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The development could become part of a systemic effort to foster a water-saving culture in Kazakhstan and introduce practical tools for the population.

How the "Water Footprint" Platform Works

A student at School-Gymnasium No. 91 Zhangir Abuov presented the "Water Footprint" platform, which calculates individual water consumption. The system takes into account the user's household habits, dietary patterns, and even indirect water resource expenditures.

The platform generates personalized recommendations. These help reduce consumption and implement more rational behavioral models in the household.

Support at the Ministerial Level

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, met with the project's author and the teachers who supervised the development. Following the discussion, a cooperation agreement was signed.

The document was concluded between the "Information and Analytical Center of Water Resources" (NJSC) and the student's parents. It provides for the further refinement of the platform and its future implementation.

Educational Component of the Project

The project’s co-developer, 10th-grade student Adiyat Shadiyar, prepared a series of short videos aimed at fostering water conservation habits in children.

The main character is an animated character named "Tamshy" (Drop), who explains in simple terms why it is important to save water and how to do so in daily life.

"One of the tasks we face is changing the public's attitude toward water resources by promoting conservation and a careful approach to water. Since 2024, the 'Save Water - Save the Future' project has been implemented, aimed at forming the correct ecological mindset among children and youth. Eco-hours are being held in schools, colleges, and universities. It is gratifying that teachers and parents are taking an active part in this work. I am confident that through joint efforts, we will form a culture of rational water use in society," noted the head of the water management agency.

As a reminder, last year the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation signed a memorandum with Dana Kadyrbek, a student at Gymnasium No. 79 in Almaty, who developed a device for collecting water from the atmosphere using modern nanomaterials. Recently, she was named one of the top three young inventors at a UN forum in Vienna.
