Astana schoolchildren learn traditional Kazakh crafts for free

In Astana, 208 schoolchildren are receiving training in traditional Kazakh crafts under the guidance of master artisans, El.kz reports citing the Kazakh Ministry of Culture and Information.

The training is being conducted as part of the “School of National Crafts” project..

The programme is delivered by 10 master artisans who were selected through a nationwide competition. They introduce children to traditional craft techniques and support them in creating their own handmade products.

A total of 331 applications were submitted by artisans from all regions of Kazakhstan to participate in the competition. Following the verification of application documents, the selection committee reviewed the candidates’ work and selected the project’s mentors.

Over 450 children expressed an interest in participating in the training. The classes are provided free of charge, while the organisers supply participants with the necessary materials and tools.

The programme covers 10 areas of traditional national craft. Particular emphasis is placed on practical workshops, during which schoolchildren work on original handmade products.

The project also includes a dedicated group for children with special educational needs. The classes are aimed at developing fine motor skills, creative thinking, and practical handcrafting skills.

The training programme will conclude on 12 August. On the closing day, the organisers will present an exhibition featuring works created by the project participants.
